GI Bill & veterans benefits for dental assistant school
If you served, or you're a military spouse building your own career, there are real funding paths worth checking before you pay tuition out of pocket. Here's how it generally works and where to start.
Start with the honest answer: it depends on your situation
Veterans benefits are not one single program — they're a family of different benefits (GI Bill chapters, vocational rehabilitation, dependent education benefits, and more) with different eligibility rules, funding levels, and paperwork depending on your service record and discharge status. Anyone who tells you a flat number without knowing your specific benefit and eligibility is guessing. The real answer always comes from the VA and your school working together on your specific file.
We work with veterans and military spouses who want to use their benefits toward the RDA program. If you think you may qualify for any veterans education benefit, tell us when you apply and we'll walk through what's needed together.
The general first steps
- Confirm your eligibility with the VA directly. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (va.gov) is the only authoritative source on which benefit you qualify for and what it covers. Start there before assuming anything about your specific entitlement.
- Check your Certificate of Eligibility (COE). This document, issued by the VA, spells out your benefit level and remaining entitlement. You'll typically need it (or a request in progress) when a school certifies your enrollment.
- Ask the school about certifying official processes. Schools that accept VA education benefits have a certifying official who reports your enrollment to the VA. Ask directly how that process works and what paperwork is needed on the school side.
- Understand your program's format matters. Benefit calculations can differ for full-time versus part-time programs, and for in-person versus online delivery. Confirm how our RDA program's schedule and format apply to your specific benefit before enrolling.
Some spousal and dependent education benefits exist separately from the veteran's own GI Bill, with their own eligibility windows. If you're a spouse exploring a career change, it's worth asking the VA specifically about dependent-focused programs rather than assuming you're only eligible for what your servicemember qualifies for.
Other funding often stacks alongside veterans benefits
Veterans benefits aren't the only funding path we see students use. Premier Dental Academy also accepts Texas Workforce Solutions vouchers and WIOA workforce funding, and offers its own payment plans for whatever a veterans benefit doesn't cover. It's worth exploring more than one option rather than assuming it has to be all-or-nothing.
As of this writing, the in-person RDA program is $3,000 paid in full, or a $3,500 payment plan with $500 down. The online program is a limited-time $397 (regularly $997). Whatever a veterans benefit or workforce voucher covers, our funding finder tool can help you see what's left and how a payment plan might fill the gap.
Questions worth asking before you commit
Before enrolling anywhere on veterans benefits, it's reasonable to ask: How long does certification typically take? What happens if my benefit doesn't cover the full cost — is there a payment plan for the difference? Is the program state-approved in a way that satisfies my specific benefit's requirements? A school that can't answer these clearly and quickly is not one you want handling your paperwork.
