First, breathe — you've done the hard part

By the time you're staring down an exam date, the real work is already behind you: the weeks of studying, the practice, the charting reps. Exam day isn't where you learn the material — it's where you show what you already know. Treating it that way takes a surprising amount of pressure off. Your job now is logistics and nerves, and both of those are manageable.

Before you go

Two things settle nerves the night before: knowing where you're going, and having your bag packed. Confirm your test location and appointment time, map the drive, and plan to arrive early — rushing is the fastest way to start rattled. Lay out an acceptable photo ID and any confirmation paperwork the night before so the morning is boring. Eat something. Sleep beats one more hour of cramming almost every time.

During the exam: how to steady yourself

Once you start, work at a steady pace. Read each question fully before you reach for an answer — the trap is usually a word you skimmed. If one stumps you, mark it and move on; a later question sometimes jogs the answer loose, and momentum matters more than any single item. Trust your first instinct on the ones you know cold, and don't let one hard question convince you the whole thing is going badly. It almost never is.

If it doesn't go the way you hoped

Not passing on the first try is not the end of your career — plenty of excellent assistants have been there, dusted off, and passed the next time. The score report tells you where to focus, and the retake process is a normal, documented path (confirm the current rules with the TSBDE).
